Marilyn Stokstad (1929-2016) - Memoriam Details

Marilyn Stokstad (1929-2016)

Marilyn Stokstad (1929-2016)

This past weekend Marilyn Stokstad, Judith Harris Murphy Distinguished Professor Emerita of Art History at the University of Kansas, passed away. Although she is best known as the author of textbooks, especially the popular survey, Art History, which is in its fifth edition, Marilyn was one of the most gracious scholars in the field. She was always looking for ways to make our discipline more hospitable to others. Somehow or another, Marilyn made everyone feel welcomed in her presence. It did not matter to her if you were a student or colleague, Marilyn was quick to start up a conversation. In 2012, the Board of the Midwest Art History Society honored her academic achievements with the Charles Cuttler Award. At that year’s conference, she talked about changes in the field, paying special attention to the place of women artists in the canon and to the challenges facing female students, past and present. Without denying past obstacles, she focused on the positive changes that have been made since her days as an undergraduate and on the need to continue this trajectory until we discover a place where all are welcomed.
