Museum Educator & Coordinator of Public Programs
Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum
Washington University in St. Louis

Responsibilities: Responsible for the development and implementation of academic & public educational programs for the Museum. Goals of these programs are to integrate collections & exhibitions into Washington University curriculum, enhance public use, develop audiences, and increase profile of Museum. Candidates must show proven interest in teaching visual literacy & critical thinking skills, especially in modern and contemporary art. He or she will build on existing programs & implement new ones, pursue active relationships in the field of museum education, & help develop & achieve institutional goals. Position reports to Museum director & chief curator & supervises the school & community programs assistant.

Requirements

  • M.A. in Art History, Arts Education, or related field, or equivalent experience
  • Familiarity with current issues in museum pedagogy & proven experience with educational program development (min. 3 years museum education experience preferred)
  • Ability to interpret curatorial visions for broad audiences
  • Ability to collaborate with, supervise, & inspire a range of student, staff, & academic professionals as well as general audiences
  • Excellent oral & written communication skills; interpersonal, supervisory, & administrative skills

The Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum founded in 1881, is a nationally accredited university art museum with an exceptional collection of 19th, 20th, and 21th century American and European art & a stimulating program of special exhibitions. Curator
The Snite Museum of Art
University of Notre Dame

Responsibilities include recommending artworks for acquisition, organizing permanent and traveling exhibitions, authoring collection and exhibition catalogs, preparing exhibition labels and other interpretive texts, teaching, directing student interns, conducting research, entering data into the collection database, and developing relationships with donors, professional colleagues, partner organizations and the community. Position reports to the director.

Requirements: Expertise in some combination of the following media and cultures: paintings, drawings, photographs or prints; American or European art. (We do not anticipate expertise in all areas.) Minimum of seven years curatorial experience at an art museum; master’s degree (Ph.D. preferred) in European or American art history; competency in at least one foreign language; broad knowledge of paintings, photographs, prints or drawings, including connoisseurship skills; record of research and scholarship, proven experience organizing exhibitions and producing interpretive materials and publications. Must be a team player with demonstrated ability to work effectively and positively with staff, students, collectors and benefactors. Museum has a small number of staff members; therefore, the successful candidate works without dedicated support staff; must manage own calls, email, typing, calendar, travel and expense reports, etc.
