Proposals of no more than 250 words and a recent CV are due by December 15 electronically to the respective chairs noted at the end of each description.

Art and Patronage
In keeping with the theme of this year’s Midwest Art History Society annual conference keynote address by Dr. Marilyn Stokstad, “Art Patronage in a Civil Society,” this session invites papers that explore the issue of patronage of the arts. Papers examining the topic of patronage from any methodological approach, historical period or location are welcome.

Art in Midwest Collections
This session invites papers on art in Midwest collections. Possible paper topics include, but are not limited to, recent acquisitions by Midwest museums, the contributions and collecting approaches of Midwestern patrons, or the themes/genres of Midwestern collections.

Issues of Patronage and Collecting Asian Art (revised description)
This panel seeks to address a wide range of issues relating to the relationship between the makers of Asian visual arts and their patrons, and the formation of collections, both within Asia and abroad, from the distant past through the present day. Possible paper topics include, but are not limited to, studies that further understanding of individual patrons and collections, or comparative studies that look at differences between public and/or institutional collections and those formed with private support, or differences in the tastes of foreign and Asian collectors.

Art History through the Lens of Modern Film
This session invites papers that explore the issue of how art history is represented in modern and contemporary film. Possible topics might explore the accuracy or inaccuracy of depictions of art historical masterpieces/monuments in film; the use of art historical theory as the basis for cinematic structures; or the modes of representation of artists’ biographies and practices in film.

Out of Flanders: The Imitation of Flemish Painting in Northern and Southern Europe
In the last decade, two exhibitions in Bruges have highlighted the phenomenon of painting created in a Flemish style outside the borders of Flanders. This session invites papers that will further examine the impact of Flemish painting on native artists in Germany, France, Italy, Spain, and the Spanish colonies in the 15th and 16th centuries. Papers might address issues such as: What defines “Flemishness” as it appears in these disparate countries? How does Flemish realism translate into other pictorial cultures? What specific motifs or themes found in Flemish painting were reproduced and reinterpreted? Papers that explore individual works of art as well as broader themes are welcome.

Glass: Forms, Functions, Interpretations
This session invites papers that explore the forms, functions and interpretations of glass throughout the history of art. Papers might explore issues such as the relationship between form and decoration in glass works, the socio-political or economic factors impacting glass production and reception, the functional aspects of glass, or historical or contemporary understandings of glass as an art form.

Open Session: American Art
This session invites paper proposals on topics related to art in the United States from the Colonial era to World War I. Although all proposals will be considered, preference will be granted to proposals offering new interpretations of familiar works or explorations of American art in an international context.
